Why is "mixed-catalog" shipping still such a nightmare for e-commerce?2d agoI’ve noticed that most platforms like Shopify handle small parcels perfectly, but the second you add a bulky LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) item to the cart, the entire checkout and logistics flow seems to break. It feels like merchants are forced to manage two entirely different universes, manual quoting for freight vs. automated labels for parcels, with almost no tech bridging the gap. Has anyone else noticed this one-size-fits-all scaling problem, or found a way to automate a mixed catalog without it becoming a manual headache? Keeping America Moving Safely.3d agoAlibaba vs. US Based Company3d agoI’ve read a handful of posts/comments here from over the last few years but most responses are quite vague. I’m specifically looking at the machine in the photo above. From home gym US companies, they’re right around $2-3k. On Alibaba, the seemingly same piece is around $500. Obviously, shipping can be a major cost there. I have experience setting up freight forwarders/LTL and would be comfortable arranging my own, which would certainly help bring that cost down. Since most of these home gym companies are importing from China, anyway, what would the major downfalls be in buying from Alibaba? Customer/product support would be the largest one that I can see, which could be a huge issue... A few tips for first time freight shippers4d agoHere’s a quick freight breakdown for anyone else new to the world of shipping: * **LTL (Less Than Truckload)** is great for a few pallets. You share the truck with other shippers, which lowers the price of shipping. * **FTL (Full Truckload)** is faster if you’ve got a truckload of cargo and don’t want it touched until it gets to your customer. * Don’t expect exact pickup/delivery times. They’re more estimates than guarantees, and delays (especially cross-border) can happen. Build in some buffer time. * Rates are based on size, weight, and more, so be accurate when getting quotes. Platforms like Freightera offer a lot of value. You can access all-inclusive freight quotes in seco... Moving one piece of furniture long distance4d agoMoving an entire house is stressful. But weirdly, moving one single piece of furniture long distance can be even more annoying. Mostly because people don’t know what their options are, how much it’ll cost, or where to even begin. I’ve had to figure this out a few times, so here’s a quick breakdown of the main ways people usually move one large piece of furniture. **LTL freight (best for heavy items that can be safely packed)** Most folks immediately think of FedEx or UPS when they want to ship something, but you can’t exactly drop a couch off at the local shipping counter. For big items, you’re usually looking at less-than-truckload (LTL) freight options. Companies like FedE... Beating the Monday Rush.5d agoMonday morning freight stress? I have seen a lot of talk lately about AI procurement on Reddit, forums and freight platforms lately. The AI tools are supposedly providing cleaner supplier data, better volume visibility, fewer surprises. In theory, that should translate into more predictable inbound freight and better LTL pricing? In practice I’m not sure how often sourcing improvements actually make it downstream to carriers and brokers in a meaningful way. For those working close to inbound freight: Have you seen AI sourcing/process impact lane stability? Does cleaner upstream data actually change how LTL is priced, or does it mostly help internally? Interested in real ex... Anyone use Logistically TMS?7d agoIt is good for 3PLs that do a little of everything or offer managed freight services. They are not a big player in the TMS world, but it seems to have what we need. Customer portal, LTL, TL and parcel Anyone use it? Thoughts? Are freight brokers necessary?7d agoIm not in the industry, just a question about LTL/hotshot. I talked to a hotshot driver at the truck stop today because I’d heard the freight brokers take a huge cut of the cost to the shipper. He said they took 60% (specifically I asked about Veritread). Is this true? Is there a way for a shipper to offer a load direct to owner/operator/drivers? Seems like an absolutely wild percentage. I bought something at an auction recently, and pursuing shipping for the first time. I’m really just trying to figure out how the system works. Better sourcing data unexpectedly improved our LTL freight rates7d agoWe originally started tightening up our supplier sourcing process because specs, MOQs, and contacts were getting messy. One unexpected side effect was freight. Once we had cleaner supplier data and more consistent shipment patterns, we were able to negotiate much better LTL rates for inbound chemicals to our factory. On the sourcing side we use Tenkara to standardize suppliers and volumes, and we still rely on our ERP and a freight broker on the logistics side. Didn’t expect the sourcing cleanup to impact freight this much, but it made lane planning and volume forecasts way clearer. Curious if others have seen sourcing improvements spill over into freight or logistics. DPS Alert8d agoDPS Alert Vehicle Accident-Injury IR15 N / CHEYENNE AVE; NB SO SAIA LTL FREIGHT X CHEYENNE/MAR 03/06/2026 03:27:29 AM Would a pallet freight class reduction calculator actually help anyone on the warehouse floor?8d agoHey everyone — quick question for the folks who load LTL freight or deal with pallet builds. I work in shipping for a light bulb wholesaler and over the past month I built a small tool that calculates **freight density and estimated class** then tells you how far off you are from the next class. We deal with classes 110, 150, and 250, so I have it set to recommend the height for the ideal class (110, 150) based on pallet dims and weight. The idea was to help avoid getting hit with reclass charges and to make sure pallets are built efficiently before they leave the dock. Right now it’s something we use internally, but I’m curious if something like this would actually be useful to othe...
